Art + Design Major - ARDE

The Art + Design (A+D) program is a unified and exploratory approach to teaching and learning complex disciplines in Studio Art, Art Education, and Graphic Design. The major is distinguished by multi-disciplinary teaching methods in both analog and digital media across all visual tracks, and by a common set of foundation courses that will build a stronger student community. The sequence of courses introduce concept development and creative risk-taking early in the curriculum. The immersive and experiential learning experience equips graduates for various careers in the arts.

Learning Outcomes for Art

Upon graduation, the art student will be able to demonstrate:

  1. Mastery of skills in his/her chosen area of specialization.
  2. Familiarity with the history of art and the ability to discuss it within the context of their work.
  3. Ability to write articulately about art.
  4. Ability to present self and work professionally.
  5. Ability to develop a cohesive body of work.

Specialization Options


Must choose one specialization to complete the Art + Design Major. 

Studio Art Specialization - ARST (28 credits)


Students will earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Studio Art Specialization .

Art Education Specialization - ARED (32 credits)


Students will earn a Bachelor of Science Degree with an Art Education Specialization. Students seeking licensure as an Art Teacher in K-12 classrooms also complete the requirements for a Secondary Education major.

Graphic Design Specialization - ARGD (32 credits)


Students will earn a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Graphic Design Specialization.

Bachelor of Arts Requirements


The requirements for a Bachelor of Arts are:

  • Students are required to take two modern language classes on Carroll’s campus to fulfill the BA requirement, with the exception of 1) transfer students who have completed language courses at their previous institutions, 2) Carroll students who take language courses at other institutions of higher education while enrolled at Carroll, 3) international students who come from non-English speaking countries, and 4) students from Puerto Rico. Students who have taken a language course through a dual-enrollment high school program need to take only one language course at Carroll. Neither retroactive credits nor AP credits fulfill the BA requirement. These policies reflect Carroll’s commitment to promoting cross-cultural education and fostering global citizenship.
  • **International students who have English as their second language should contact the Registrar concerning the Modern Language requirement.
