BHP 515 - Advanced Social and Multicultural Psychology

The course introduces students to classic and contemporary theories, research in social psychology, and the foundations of diversity as it relates to the practice of clinical and counseling psychology. Content will emphasize theoretical perspectives and the analysis of empirical work to understand how patients’ unique differences including race, ethnicity, culture, sex, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, abilities, and religious, political, and other ideologies shape behavioral health. This course will highlight the impact of institutional discrimination and cultural norms in describing and predicting individuals’ behaviors. Evidence-based practices for working with diverse clients will be emphasized. Topics include person perception, the self, prejudice, aggression, pro-social behaviors, cultural awareness, gender development, gender socialization, and sex-role stereotypes.
